Of course You have to be clear on the definition of genius: if You mean as a genius someone with a IQ over the average, IMHO You can work hard, but is a talent that either You have or You don’t.
But if You move for a moment to a more significant definition of someone standing out of the crowd, then working hard producing lot of work,in part of good quality.
This gives the perception to others of someone delivering on an average more quality than others.

Could seem that praising is the opposite of gaining authority, but is not like this.
Praising, if used carefully and with intelligence, is a really effective way to gain authority.
Praising uses a mechanism of confirmation of qualities expressed by other persons, either if it’s made towards people near to you personally or on work.
Praising seems a strange way to achieve and reinforce authority, but gives a clear signal of your ability and will to give a judgement on this person.
