J. Cayero at I-techies world news commented on an Eve O´Neill article on top 10 leadership qualities (full article here)
What follows are my comments:
- Integrity is the integration of outward actions and inner values: I agree is one of the key points. A leader represents a model for people either belonging to his/her organization or external. And being a leader with recognized integrity makes you a “better” leader
- Dedication means spending whatever time or energy is necessary to accomplish the task at hand.: Doesn’t mean being workaholic, but work all you can to reach the task with your team. My concept of leadership is the one in “We were soldiers”: “I cannot tell you I will bring you back all safe at home, but I’ll be the first one to step down from the helicopter and the last one to step in”
- Magnanimity means giving credit where it is due. As a leader you should share your success with other members of the team if they contributed to achieve results, because the more credit you deserve to your people (either of your organization or external) more you will be recognized as a leader.
- Openness means being able to listen to new ideas, even if they do not conform to the usual way of thinking.: I agree, though this doesn’t mean accepting everything from your people; means evaluating the idea with prejudices
- Creativity is the ability to think differently, to get outside of the box that constrains solutions. : the only problem is that, in my opinion, or you have the gift of being creative, or you can only try to reduce the gap, but chances are that you won’t reach great levels
- Fairness means dealing with others consistently and justly. I agree this is one great point
- Assertiveness is not the same as aggressiveness. Rather, it is the ability to clearly state what one expects so that there will be no misunderstandings. : True, is a good point, and luckily, if you don’t have it you can work on it
