What you have most important on work, despite yourself is your team.
This doesn’t mean you have to tolerate anything from the team, but always keep in mind that if you only use them to achieve goals, sooner or later you’ll pay this.
Of course teams have individuals inside and the hard thing is keeping them together, especially if working on a project basis (where things go at speed of light and at incredible pace and you have no time to manage all team aspects).
The key for success is variable and depends a lot on individuals you have in your team and is mainly based to give your team a self conscience and a coordinated approach to things.
Of course is something you don’t plug and play and takes little steps.
As I said before things can vary on many factors, but a good rule of thumb is to:
- ponder your reactions to stimulus either if it is internal or external, giving the team the time to decide itself, though maintaining a control on decisions. You can start delegating while group acquires a progressive autonomy and coordination in giving responses.
- Leave no one behind: everyone is part of the group and should stay within the group. Successes and losses are common.
- Gain respect as a leader: be the first to get on the field and be the last one to go out of the “battle”
- Remember to treat people as humans, not as slaves. This doesn’t mean not to work hard, but to appreciate work done
- Be a leader, don’t be authoritative.
- Say thanks when deserved
